Q&A

• Can you say the bridge word more than once before you give the treat? I use “good” when cleaning their feet to praise them when they hold their feet up nicely. so I keep telling them “good” through out the process and give them the treat at the end. Is that OK?

• What is the significance of teaching colors? How does it fit in with liberty training?

• Are there some horses who are just not excited about liberty work/play? Or would it be mostly the way it is being offered?

• I am thinking you can advance enough with body language that you don't need to be yelling and saying to your horse good, good, yes, and so on.... I have watched many videos where people are just talking talking talking. I would think horses would get dull to it. do you agree? Am I clear in my question..... I am an introvert and all this yelling is disturbing to me.

• David what do you think of Frederic Pignon’s strategy of getting horses to run around the whole area freely before scooping them back to do things with him? This of course is always within an enclosed space no matter how large.

• When you are warming up for a liberty session, you would maybe do a different type of warm up than you might for an online session or a riding session?

• My horse loves to circle me and he wants to stay in a small circle to get him to make the circle larger I swish him out pointing the stick at his his middle belly. If I don’t continue to swish at the belly he wants to make the circle smaller . Is that what I should do or something else?

• How do you balance your drive and draw at Liberty? When doing flying changes my horse draws in well, but wants to keep coming close instead of driving out. My horse Chief and I are working on our level 4 Liberty. We just earned our level 4 Online

• A question for David. I lost my horse several months ago to an accident. I am considering getting a new horse and I am wondering what considerations would you have in mind when looking for a new horse. My main interest is liberty and what I call 'dressage at liberty'. With my late horse, a high spirited LBE/LBI we were level 3 in Parelli.

• When you are warming up for a liberty session, you would maybe do a different type of warm up than you might for an online session or a riding session?

• My Ollie loves to pick things up, and I have encouraged that during our liberty sessions. But, when I am doing something else, Ollie will also default to trying to pick things up, which is sometimes fine, but sometimes not desired. I have been just ignoring it, when I haven’t asked for it, and go on with the other thing that I was asking for. Does this seem a good approach?

The Best Ways for Me to Help You with Your Liberty

There are two very effective ways for me to help you excel in Liberty Training, and improve the relationship you have with your horses.  First, having a one-on-one coaching session, and second, to observe a series of these sessions as a “Gallery Student.”  I am now offering these opportunities in an on-line Webinar event.

 I’d like to think I’m not so “grizzled” – but I am a 30-year veteran of helping students create a Liberty connection with their horses that resists distractions, no matter where you are playing.

Sit in the Gallery, watch, listen and post questions for two hours, as I advise and coach 3 to 4 students on their individual video submissions. During the event I will share the student videos - stopping, starting and highlighting relevant sections while I discuss with the student my thoughts and suggestions.

• Choose the COACHING SESSION option and purchase. If your video is not selected, you will join the other Gallery Students, and I will refund the difference in price.  
• Upload a horizontal format video of 5–15 minutes in length to YouTube (UNLISTED), and email the link to David@DavidLichman.com with the Subject Line: Hitching Post. Include a brief description of you and your horse and what you would like help with. Make the video as high resolution as you can, and try to have someone zoom in and follow the action where possible.  Cell phone video works great.
